For years, "Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe" was a simple trade-off: Lemon Squeezy as a merchant of record that handles global tax for you, or Stripe as a payment processor that gives you control and lower fees but leaves tax compliance on your desk. Then Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in July 2024, and in January 2026 Lemon Squeezy said its future is being built through Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant-of-record product.
So the question in 2026 is really three-way: stay on Lemon Squeezy, move to Stripe with Stripe Billing and Stripe Tax, or move to Stripe Managed Payments. This guide compares them on fees, tax, features and reporting, so you can pick based on your numbers rather than a headline rate.
What Happened Between Stripe and Lemon Squeezy
- July 2024: Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy. Terms weren't disclosed.
- 2025-2026: Stripe launched Managed Payments, where Stripe (via Link) acts as merchant of record for digital products and SaaS, handling sales tax, VAT and GST, fraud, disputes and transaction-level customer support.
- January 2026: Lemon Squeezy's 2026 update said the team is building the future of merchant of record through Stripe Managed Payments, acknowledged slower support and fewer product updates, and said the goal is an easy path for Lemon Squeezy users to move over.
Lemon Squeezy still processes payments, and no shutdown date has been announced. But if you're choosing a platform for the next few years, it's fair to assume Stripe Managed Payments is where Lemon Squeezy's merchant-of-record business is heading.
Merchant of Record vs Payment Processor
This is the real difference, and it matters more than the fee.
Lemon Squeezy (and Stripe Managed Payments) are merchants of record. Legally, they sell your product to the customer. They calculate, collect and remit sales tax, VAT and GST around the world, handle chargebacks and refund requests, and pay you what's left. You don't register for VAT in the EU or sales tax in US states yourself.
Stripe (Billing + Tax) is a payment processor. You are the seller. Stripe processes the card, and Stripe Tax can calculate and collect tax, but registering in each jurisdiction and filing returns is your responsibility (or your accountant's, or a filing service's).
If you sell to consumers in many countries and don't have a finance person, a merchant of record removes real work. If you mostly sell B2B in a few markets and already have an accountant, Stripe's lower fees may be worth the admin.
Fees Compared
Headline rates as published at the time of writing. Always check the current pricing pages before deciding.
Lemon Squeezy: 5% + $0.50 per transaction, plus surcharges of +0.5% on subscription payments, +1.5% for buyers outside the US and +1.5% on PayPal subscription payments.
Stripe Billing + Stripe Tax: standard US card processing at 2.9% + $0.30, Stripe Billing at 0.7% of billing volume, and Stripe Tax at 0.5% per transaction where you're registered. International cards and currency conversion add more. Tax filing is extra if you outsource it.
Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe says it adds 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe processing fees, with Billing and local payment methods billed separately.
What a US subscription costs on each
| Monthly plan | Lemon Squeezy | Stripe Billing + Tax | Stripe Managed Payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $1.05 (10.5%) | $0.71 (7.1%) | $0.94 (9.4%) + Billing |
| $20 | $1.60 (8.0%) | $1.12 (5.6%) | $1.58 (7.9%) + Billing |
| $50 | $3.25 (6.5%) | $2.35 (4.7%) | $3.50 (7.0%) + Billing |
| $100 | $6.00 (6.0%) | $4.40 (4.4%) | $6.70 (6.7%) + Billing |
Lemon Squeezy includes the subscription surcharge. Stripe Billing + Tax includes card processing, Billing and Tax, but not the cost of filing returns. Managed Payments is card processing plus 3.5%; if you also use Stripe Billing for subscriptions, add 0.7%. For buyers outside the US, add 1.5% to Lemon Squeezy and international card fees to Stripe.
Two things stand out. Lemon Squeezy's fixed $0.50 hurts most on cheap plans. And on higher-priced plans, Stripe Managed Payments isn't automatically cheaper than Lemon Squeezy once the 3.5% sits on top of processing. Run your own average plan price and customer mix through the payment fee comparison or the Stripe fee calculator before you move.

Which One Fits
Stay on Lemon Squeezy for now if it's working, you rely on license keys or the affiliate program, and you'd rather move once Stripe publishes a clear migration path.
Choose Stripe Billing + Stripe Tax if you sell mostly to businesses, in a few countries, want the lowest fees and full control of checkout, and have someone to handle tax registrations and filings.
Choose Stripe Managed Payments if you want to keep a merchant of record but on Stripe's platform, sell subscriptions or digital products, and are in one of its supported countries.
Look wider if neither fits. Paddle, Polar.sh and Creem.io are all merchants of record built for software. See Lemon Squeezy alternatives, Polar vs Stripe and Stripe vs Paddle.
What Each Choice Does to Your Reporting
Your billing platform decides what your revenue data looks like, and any move between them is where MRR history usually breaks.
- On Lemon Squeezy, watch for first payments recorded as both an order and an invoice, one-time sales mixed in with subscriptions, and net revenue that doesn't account for the surcharges.
- On Stripe, you get the richest data of any provider, but you're responsible for reporting tax correctly, and MRR calculated from subscription status rather than paid invoices overstates revenue. See How We Calculate MRR at Chartsy.
- During a move, customers who leave Lemon Squeezy and start again on Stripe look like churn in one system and new MRR in the other. Unless both sit in one view, your trend line shows a cliff and a spike that never happened.
Chartsy connects Lemon Squeezy and Stripe side by side, along with Paddle, Polar.sh, Freemius and Creem.io. Your MRR is laid out plainly - what it is, what moved it and where it came from - with a split by source so you can watch customers move from one to the other. Add one script to your website and you also see which channels bring paying customers, on either platform. For the step-by-step, read how to move off Lemon Squeezy without losing your MRR history.
